Fresh from their WOMAD Festival appearance in New Zealand, world music ensemble Constantinople brings to the hall “a poetic encounter between strings and voice, from the traditions of the Mandingo Kingdom to the music of the Persian court.”

For nearly twenty years this Montreal-based quartet with members from Canada and Senegal has explored musical diversity through the lens of ‘East meets West’, an ever-changing musical melting pot much like the city they are named after. According to Tehran-born frontman Kiya Tabassian, who arrived in Canada at age 6, "The aim of Constantinople has always been to create a new music based on different cultures and the exchange between cultures."

The inspiration for their latest project is a poetic meeting between strings and voice, with Senegalese musician Ablaye Cissoko adding kora to a tuneful celebration of life and nature. Ablaye is a virtuoso on the West African harp, which is considered to be the most sophisticated string instrument on the continent. The kora has a centuries old tradition at royal courts where musicians enjoyed an elevated social status.

In its construction and playing technique, the kora is unique in the world. Made from a large calabash cut in half and covered with leather, it has 21 strings positioned on a suspended bridge with wooden pins for easy tuning. The placement of the strings allows for the playing of chords and harmonies and melodic runs so quick the sound ripples like water.

The musical feast that is Constantinople includes Ablaye Cissoko on kora & vocals, Kiya Tabassian on setar & vocals, Pierre-Yves Martel on viola da gamba, and Ziya Tabassian on tombak & percussions.

Opening artist for this special world music concert is classically-trained local guitarist, Jesse Epp.
