Five Alarm Funk is all about epic, intense arrangements, heavy groove and a ton of fun. Eight members. A drum kit, timbales, congas, bass, guitars, trumpet, saxophone. Sparkles. Tutus. Cowboy hats. Tights. A stuffed zebra. Inflatable sharks being ridden across the stage, and subsequently playing the congas.
Welcome to Vancouver’s Five Alarm Funk, a multi-instrumental funk outfit that have been together for more than a decade. Gimmicky is their shtick, and it couldn’t work better for them. They offer costume changes, character cameos, inflatable shark hijinks, and enough energy to fuel a whole festival. In fact, it’s what makes their live shows such an experience. Their theatrics work perfectly with their ten-minute tracks.
The Vancouver-based band is eight men strong and over a decade deep into a career that has seen it release seven acclaimed albums and burn up stages across the country on national tours. And this vehicle isn’t about to slow down. In fact, Five Alarm Funk is just picking up steam. And – we should mention this for your own protection – in a small hall this band is LOUD!
